One of our Pennington 1238's is trying to self-destruct! We had a good soaking rain over Friday-Sunday and the main vine has gained about 4' in length in 3 days. During this same 3 days, a secondary vine shot out, straight skyward, about a foot from the stump. I guess it thought it was a tree! Anyway, it's about 2' long now and has fallen over and crimped itself about 2" from the main vine.

Should I leave it alone and let it take care of itself, or should I prune it so it doesn't suck goodies from the main vine? If it was just another field pumpkin, I'd leave it alone and let nature run its course, but this is one of our hopefuls sitting on a mound surrounded by 500 lbs of horse manure, not to mention it is the largest and fastest growing vines. Germinated 4/9 and the main vine is already about 10' long...I really don't want to screw this one up!

kyp, leave it for a few days and then decide? It might continue to grow...if not, as an early secondary...loosing it prbly won't hurt a lot!!! Grow em BIG!!! Peace, Wayne

kyp trim it off.the plant wont miss a beat.those early secondaries that point to the sky can damage the main as theyre trying to lay down.if you prune it the plant will grow faster somewhere else
