Hi rich,
Everything that I have read and all that I have asked have told me that you want to have at least 10 ft on each side of your stump (for a total of 20 ft wide) and at least 20 feet for your length (for your main vine to run). At least for the christmas tree pattern this is the case which is what I'm doing. My area in my patch is 24 wide by 70 long and I've got three plots going with 2 plants in each right now and will choose the best growers in each plot in another week or two. Hope this helps and good luck!!
