I transplanted both my plants yesterday just to find out that both look pretty dead today. It didn't freeze overnight. What would cause plants to die off so fast?

Were the roots heavily disturbed? Or the stems broken?

nope, not at all. The entire pot's worth of dirt and roots came out of the pot nicely and into the ground. Do plants need to get acclimatized to the sun (otudoors) before they go into the ground?

Would cold water be enough to kill them? I used the water from a small stream that runs next to the patch.

did you leave the hoop house closed and you baked them?

Simple,,,,,, you needed to harden your plants off before transplanting them.... they were not acustom to the elements....

Give them a little water and heat, they may perk right up.

No hoop house in Ottawa and not hardening off are likely your problems. You at least need to cover your plants at night with a Styrofoam cooler, but a hoop house or mini-green house of some sort to protect the plants from the wind would be best. Usually you want to set the plants out in pots during the day time for a few days prior to setting out in the ground, to get them hardened off as well. You should also use some supplemental heat at night in your green house for the next couple weeks. All I use is a 100W light bulb or a trouble light!

You can still start more seeds if these don't come out of it. If you need plants, I can give you some contacts closer to you that may be able to help you out. Give me an e-mail if you wish...John. [email protected]

You gotta treat those plants like a child constant pampering. That means let and give them time to harden off and don't let them bake in a hoophouse. If the temp outside is over 60 i'd say you gotta vent those green houses..

UV Burn....as Josiah called it. They may recover if the tip was not burnt to badly.

I think I overwatered them, if that's possible. I had some spare plants that I re-planted and they were fine. Thanks for all the info though, it's stuff I'll remember for next year
