I just finished reading Susan Warren's 2006 "Backyard Giants", and I would recommend it to everyone. It's a very engaging and interesting book, and very satisfying to read. No errors that I can see, and offers insight into the makings of a WR.

That was one amazing thing about that book.... no errors! Well, there might be one somewhere, but it must be hard to find. In contrast, the local newspaper came out to interview me on giant pumpkin growing a few years ago. I analyzed the resulting story, and found 21 "statements of fact" in it. Of those 21, 15 were just plain wrong. They even attributed some quotes to me that I never said.
Anyway, there's a big difference in telling a story and telling a TRUE story. And Susan Warren (no relation) did a great job.

Cliff, I think there is an error in the book. In the book it has a list of top performing seeds, and has the 985 Werner seed listed as the 1985 Werner. At least I think it's the Werner seed listed, I don't have my book in front of me now. That's the only error I noticed.

After checking, the "1985 Werner" is listed on page 59 of How-to-Grow world class giant pumpkins the organic way and NOT "Backyard Giants". Sorry for the confusion, my pumpkin info is starting to run together.

A friend of mine saw it in a bookstore and bought it for me. I just finished it a few days ago too. Even though I knew the ending already it was still fun to read it. Very well written, I thought.

I rewrote the ending and Pap ends up being the hero and Ron gets the pretty girl and rides off into the sunset.

It's in our club library, I got a slightly pre-read one off Amazon... and had a few more page turnings :) Great Book.
