When the vines start to run (the 6th true leave is opening and many others are visible at the tip of the vine), is 2 T/gal of 5-1-.5 fish fertilizer every 3 days too much? I'm giving the plant 5 gallons of the stuff in a 3'diameter drench

Have you thought of using seaweed?

Matt, slow down buddy. Why are you fertilizing every 3 days! 2 tablespoons isn't very much but I would question the frequency and the necessity. Jim

No, not too much you could put it every day and you will be fine. In fact when the plant starts to vine that will be too little. I suggest some 10-10-10 once a week once they start to vine. IMHO

I meant like a liquid fertilizer 10-10-10 not the granules. And I am guessing that they are a new grower without many soil amendments. I fertilize my plants with a tablespoon of calcium nitrate per week usually to get the vegetative growth going in Late May-Mid June and they do not show any negative effects. You will not grow a pumpkin bigger than 300-500 lbs if you ONLY use fish/seaweed and have soil that is not 100% balanced and perfect. These plants are heavy feeders a measly .5-1-.5 is not enough. I know from past experience with just fish fertilization. If you just use fish from my experience the plant is starved. And the fish fertilizer is expensive and does not do as much as a chemical fertilizer will.

Nic, this is just flat out bad advice.
As Tree doctor stated, go slow.

I also question the frequency and the amount. but I also know that you can grow bigger than 300- 500 using fish/seaweed. gr8 pumpkin you have some really experience growers in your area and you should tap into some of those resources.

I said you couldnt grow a pumpkin bigger than that with JUST fish seaweed. It seems you are taking what I say out on context. You can't burn anything with fish.

I've been told that soluble fertilizers are way to high in salt and are more deadly to the soil then they do good. I've seen plenty of growers that fertilize once a week and they grow some huge pumpkins. Not sure what's the formula in the fertilizer is. Then Again I like the fish and seaweed mixed. To much fertilizer will kill the plant and burn the leaves. Be careful on the advice you take from people on the net and this sight. So many opinions and so many ideas that may not work for you.

Sorry if I ticked anyone off. What I wrote and what I was trying to say are two different things. I could not explain my opinion. Everyone has there own technique and I guess and It is not up to me to say what is wrong and what is right.
