this is my first year using heating cables.the soil just above the cables is 85 degrees.I was trying for 75.will this be too warm for the new plant?

heating cables are supposed to have a thermostat that shuts the cables heat off after it reaches 72 ( or so ) degrees. should not be a worry. the ground above the cables at 85 is a good think if monitored for any wilting that first few days getting accustomed to temp chamges and the suns rays.

I purposely placed the heating cable thermostat to the outside of the loop to gain more heat...and it worked...too hot, about 90*. Repositioned it today and shut them off waiting for soil to cool some before trying again. Hope this helps.
