Something is eating my plant, I just put in the ground. Yesterday I found one leaf had a hole the size of a nickel in it, today a leaf had a piece missing. I'm going to cover it over night, air tight, lightly spray with a bug killer. I hope it works.

I thought I would add The Pumpkin Guy next to my name for a while, I garden at a community garden, people always come up to me and ask, are you the pumpkin guy.

Question #1 are you using some little stakes to prop up your plant, and what are the chances that the wind is blowing the leaves into the stakes and tearing them? Be careful spraying anything on a young plant. Better to put up with some damage than to kill the plant with love.

Hav'ent looked for slug signs, no little stakes. I'm going for a very light application of sevin in the area.

chemicals might be a little harsh for the young plant in a hoop house.
Try sprinkling garlic powder all around the the seedling.

slugs...did you have a recent rain? they have a hard time making tracks over dry soil. check under walking boards...put out some sluggo or some other slug bait encircling the plants. i did see a corn beetle today..pretty early in illinois...that means the first wave of cukes could be in less than a couple of weeks. the are already in tennessee from what i have read. i will drench in some merit tomorrow morning with a watering that is needed anyway.

wayne...i saw another beetle that was glonden yellow wings with black diamonds sort of. thought it was a cuke til a grabbed it and got a good look. i imagine beetles of similar size have to get warmed up about the same time. illinois had the warmest april on record above average by 6 degrees. hopefully this upcoming cooler period will slow the emergence time down. i hate to spray plants this small. yes...i drenched with merit today. i have never used garlic spray. i think i will go with a very very light dose of talstar one if they come early.

I have a lot in common with slugs we both like pumpkins and BEER... I brew beer in the winter to put out in small bowls in the garden, It keeps them off the plants. Might be safer than chemicals right now.

I'm sure this has nothing to do with it but, I just put buckets over the plant because MN is getting cool tonight. When I put it on there was a frog a foot from one of the other plants. I seen a frog next to my plant today,,only it could'nt of been a frog because yesterday the plant was covered, co it had to be something small.

let that frog hang around all he wants , that frog is a great insect killer, but I dont think they eat slugs though, not sure.
