I think August is the worst! When you just know that when you take that sheet off that you'll see a split in your biggest pumpkin. You already put all the work in and it just doesn't matter anymore.

The last couple weeks can be bad. Will it frost? Will the pumpkin split? (My son and I both lost personal bests in the last week of 2005) Will there be a mouse hole in the bottom? Will a deer or groundhog get in the patch and wreck the pumpkin (ask Carlson & Petersen about that) Will it rain and be too muddy to get the pumpkin out of the patch?

No vines running here, just surviving.

34 degrees here last night. One of my plants is looking frumpy. The other two look great. Go figure. We are in a heavy cold weather/rain trend. If I could only have some sun! It's a roll of the dice. You start early hoping to win the fair, then the weather dictates your growth rates. Good luck

Kenny, May is tough in respect to huge weather fluctuations. Don't try to push plants in May...It only takes one frost or forgetting to open hoops (100 + degrees) to set you back. May is protect your seedling month...Last year another local grower lost all his plants..we replanted May 25th...he caught up and pollinated July 6th. Good Luck..Mark

its a very long season my young leaf hopper.
if they held the weigh-offs in mid august a lot more growers would be in contention for a world championship and, at that point in the season some world champions would not even make the top ten.
its a marathon not a sprint. i dont worry about where the oter growers are at.theres always going to be rumors out there regarding pumpkins that are possibly bigger than yours. the scale will tell the tale.

Kurty, psssst, if you know a secret, keep it to yourself. There is no need to start getting people excited already in the season. Remember, loose lips sink ships.

Thanks all. I've been treating these things with extra special super dooper kid gloves. Waking up to see how hot or cold it may or may not be outside. Adding the right amount of moisture, Ventilation, I got some great seeds andd i'd like to do them justice. Not to mention all the pre season work to the compost pile..lol Coffee grounds anyone!
