So besides pumpkins my mom and I are into alpcas. She owns one and about to get 2 more. So by the end of the summer it will be 5 since 2 are pregnant. Anyway the alpaca farmer shears other peoples animals and he needed some help today. I am also growing pumpkins on his elderly neighbors property. (also a very nice person)

Anyway on the way back from this shearing job we got to talking about pumpkins. He asked me if I grew a real big one if I could sell the seeds or do the club just fundraise. I explained how people don't really sell their seed, and give them to clubs or help other growers out. It is considered somewhat low to sell a seed unless your a club. He asked that there was no money envolved and I told him about prize money. He then asked what the clubs do with the money from auctions. I told how it is used mainly for prize money. So he said you growers will spend hundreds of dollars on a seed sometimes to maybe possiblly win some back in the fall. I said yes. he was just like, you growers are crazy. And I told him it was more compition and fun than anything else. I don't care. Gotta a brand new patch that is 10 times the zize as the one at my house for 2 more plants.

I've been associated with antique cars for years, done restorations, built hot rods, done magazine articles and newsletter stuff for clubs, etc. I find that the pmpkin group is a somewhat similar to the car groups in that they do all this for competition and fun with about the only reward being bragging rights. We in the car circles, however, seem less likely to give a fellow something needed though, but that is probably because cars don't reproduce like pumpkins. What do ya do with all those seeds you don't plant? Either roast'em and eat'em, pitch'em, or give them away!

Personally, I like this group a lot better than the car group!
