having issues with my back, probably won,t grow this year. what is the best green manure to plant in patch this summer to build up the soil. have fall rye in now. thanx craig

I would recommend sorghum sudangrass. I don't think there is anything better for a summer cover crop. It has a high biomass, grows quickly, builds myco in the soil, adds a little nitrogen and has nematode, weed and disease supression qualities. If you cut it before it gets two feet tall the roots will go really deep into the sub soil. I grew it last summer after getting wiped out by hail. It needs to be planted when it is warm and it should be tilled in before the first frost. It loves the heat but doesn't do well in cold weather.

Joe Jutras, Ron Wallace, and Steve Connolly all use sudangrass(as shown in their SNGPG video)for their green manure. Does that tell you anything?

just dont let it root too well. you have to beat the soil up to incorporate it.

I also think sudan grass is the plant of choice for mycor production, another positive.
