It`s about time to get things started and wanted to know what you think is the best seed to plant for a BIG and ORANGE pumpkin ? I know the 772 Poirier is one.

1159 Richards. Not a lot of offspring yet, at least I can't find many but the 1102 Pukos is a big orange beauty with great shape.

James the 954 Pugh might be a good one, it grew the really bright orange 1333 Skinner that measured out over 1600lbs, it did go light although, but the other pumpkin grown off the 954 seed went almost 14% heavy.
The other seed for growing big and orange that I like is the 904 Stelts, you just couldn't beat the size and the bright orange color of the 1662 that the 904 grew.

Hey Jim, my 650 might be the dark orange horse, 845 DiMarco (845 Dimarco 04 x 1233.5 Reiss) X 335 Gerry (746 Snyder x 904 Stelts) and 20 plus % heavy weighed at Elmira.

yea, its hard to top that 772, and crossing it with a 810 Dill I really think you will have a winner in that seed cross. I think alot of the orange growers would want to give that seed a try!
Im not much of a orange grower but that cross I would defiantly grow. Do the cross James! ha!

I've seen a few 904 offspring at weighoffs that were impressive(2x Dill award) and talked to a grower who has grown different seeds with the 904 as the pollinator and the results have been orange, heavy, and nicely shaped.

603.5 Muller has two progeny over 1000 lbs. that I'm aware of(biggest 1041 lbs....grown by me....toot!toot!LOL). Consistantly produces orange fruits and frequently goes heavy to the chart.

I think the 1059 V-M will be a big star in 2010. Along with my 923 Gerhardt which is 434 x 603.5 Muller. The 434 has produced some notables and some Howard Dill award winners some of which can be seen starting here:

For a non proven seed that hasnt been grown yet I think will grow a big and orange, 700 Rodonis 09 (772 x 1385). I know there is a few orange growers out there that know more about orange then I do, and that they also dont think this seed will grow a nice solid orange, but Im hoping they are wrong, ha!,,, and really think it will grow a nice pretty orange, and big too!,,lol.

I Agree Brooks,,, it has it all. Brooks the cross on the 1110 was (1370 x 1068 ) and the 1347 was reversed (1068 x 1370) it has great genes.

I think the 1348 Hester(1370 X 1068) has good potential for size and color. Jim(Orangeneck).... I think your 492.5 Gerhardt 08 could prove to be a better color producer than your 434 and 923...and that's saying alot, as those have great orange potential.

Doug, the problem is that I only have room for 1 of my own seeds this year. I agree that the 492.5 (670 x 603.5) has big potential but figure my best chance at getting one of my orange seeds popular is to go with the 923, since the higher weight will encourage more growers to give it a shot.

For BIG and orange here's a seed that is rarely mentioned. The 1069 Zunino. This was a beautiful bright orange fruit from one of the largest 670 Daigle offsprings - the 1191 Zunino. On the pollinator side of the 1191 is a litany of the top orange genetics including the 810 Dill, the 801 Stelts and the 1230 Daletas.
The 1069 was pollinated with the 1450 Wallace to bring in some big and heavy genetics. The 1069 has rarely been planted but last year grew the largest pumpkin ever grown in the fog of Half Moon Bay - the 1200 Muller.
See: http://bigpumpkins.zunino.net/CodeRed.htm
Deserves a mention when thinking BIG and orange....

I bought my seeds from seedoutlet(i think that was the name) in years past, but they are not around anymore. I've only been doing this a few years and am not looking for a WR pumpkin just a good shape and color with decent size. Basically the stuff from this topic, but I have no idea where to get them, any ideas?
