I had something similar. They ask for your password posing as your e mail provider and saying there is a problem with your account. I thought maybe they are reading e mail addresses off the message board on here and then trying to trick people into giving out password info. I first got one after posting on here. At any rate i deleted it but just be careful for that type of mail.

Friend's mom got one and she replied but didn't put the password in.

It's a general phish going around.

Thanks for the reply Merrman and Deb, I did not open it and sent it to JUNK. I got another weird email from a Chris regarding something like the above, will go to JUNK also. Guess you gotta be on your toes. I just didnt want people on my contact list to open and get stung. At least I wasnt hacked. Stevann

Oh yea, when you put your email addy on a message board of anykind you should use AT instead of the @ sign. For now crawlers cant pick them up, but Im sure they will eventually find a way.

when ever you tell someone to email you make sure to tell them to put in what ever you are talking about in the subject line or it gets deleighted. If I don't know who it is from or asking for importent info, get rid of it. Any time something is asking for privet info it's a scam, get rid of it.If it is important the person will contact you another way.

If it purports to be from any account you hold, including social stuff, paypal, eBay, your bank, your credit card...

Never click through. I've seen some very good ones that say right on the heisted body text do not click through then there is a clickthrough link offered.

Either pick up phone to contact bank or credit card to see if there is an issue... go to a freshly opened browser window and type in the contact link you have yourself-NOT from that email. (same for phone calls, if in doubt tell them you want to initiate the call-your right by law-and hang up. Call from a phone number you have, NOT anything they provide you. If there is an issue the bank or CC will have your info and not be prompting you to provide it!)

Never highlight and click/paste/copy. Never copy anything from the email.

Some common ones are 'you've added [email protected] email address' to your paypal account. Or a purported dispute or question for an eBay item you supposedly sold or are selling. Or 'so and so has added you to their facebook account' and you have no idea who they are. OR your bank is updating and needs you to update your online info.

Some are innocent looking, they heist someone's address book and send out stuff with an attachment. One even took a legit file from the person's system (random) and attached it and the nasty one (two attachments) If you opened one the other would fire.

Then there is being spoofed on the return address. I have received this one many a time. Chris, (and before him, Curt) got truely hijacked and the entire rest of that email was a rather standard format spam/phish/evil email.. I knew immediately that it wasn't from him (both cases) and it was kill on sight. Croley, what it sounds like you got, was just a standard phish spammed wideband.

You can't be too careful.
