hello all, im a lonely giant pumpkin grower in New Zealand. there are many kids growing pumpkins here, generally getting 50 to 80 kilograms, but competition growing is still relatively new here. which means that sharing knowledge and experience is not easy........ thank god for this website.
anyway, i have grown a pumpkin that im proud of, i have faced a few problems beyond my control...... namely massive pine trees blocking 3 hours of sun every day,and other problems that im learning about.... like mildew!! and probably not enough fert. still have 2 weeks to the weigh off, and am looking forward to it. took off the covers today to give the pumpkin a nice orange tan. new pics are on my diary, might take a day to activated. if there are any New Zealand growers reading this forum, i would like to chat. giant pumpkins are fun to grow, looking forward to next year. the seed is a 994 hemphill'08. hope to get a higher weight seed for next season.
regards

Macivo,
Great looking pumpkin you have there!
Theres at least two new NZ growers on this site who will grow for competition next season. Looks like NZ is on right track. Finland started 2007 and its getting bigger and better every year. Shoot me an e-mail and I can get you touch with those two NZ boyz!

wow!! thanks for the replies........ i will write to all when i can. i have read alot of the posts and forums here, and recognise some of the names here. yes Pap i would like that copy of tips. the local A and P show is trying hard to get the pumpkin comp going. last year i won second place of about 30 pumpkins, this year i backed out because im entered into the royal easter show which is supposed to be the premier pumpkin competition in NZ. also our local show organisers were a bit miffed that i didnt enter this year, but have promised to help them out with seeds (my ones) and all the things i have learned in the last 3 years. i live in Tuakau which is a rural town in Franklin, a farming district 40 minutes south of Auckland, NZs biggest city. there is pumpkin fever starting here, but its for the kids....... i would like to see grown ups having a serious go like i am. i hope my pumpkin will help start a bit of friendly competition in this area. the winning pumpkin at the local show was 83 kgs. infact all the pumpkins in the show this year would of fitted inside my one........ sad so my goal for the next season is to get others into it. also to get the NZ record.

Hey guys, Sam here from www.giantpumpkins.co.nz
Do you think there is enough interest here in NZ to start a giant pumpkin association, or something similar?
Be interested to hear what you think, and thanks to everyone that has been sharing information, seeds, etc, you guys rock.
