Besides the obvious, what are the main differences in liquid/powdered kelp? Which is better to use or does it actually matter as long as it is kelp?

With powdered (or micronized)you don't pay to ship...water.
Liquid product will offer nutrient support immediately, if foliar applied and/or if the soil is proper. With any powder or 'meal' product one must allow for microbial interaction within the soil, but the feeding process to the plant is much longer-term and the plant feeds when it is hungry.
Use them both !....but no need to over-do either, just apply on a consistent and regular routine. Apply the lquid as a foliar just as the sun is rising or just after it has set.
