I know there was a list last year moving around and I have a person to place on it from our VT auction. I realize things come up, but it really upsets me when they say the check is in the mail and 3 weeks later they don't even answer emails.
Thanks
John

John,
put the seed lots up for a silent seed auction on the raffle/seed auction board, and forget about this non pay guy.

Maybe it might be a good idea to email these people next year before the auction starts(if you dont have his email some one will, try to find it from people on the boards. Hell even send him a letter if you have to. tell him you will not be accepting any of his bids unless a substantial amount of money is put up front first before he is allowed to bid.

But if he doesnt do this with you and does ends up bidding in front of 120 or more people in the auction room, put him out there, tell him his bid doesnt count due to non payment from prevoius years auctions. (because you gave him a warning what needed to be done first before he bids)

Id Also send that name to all the club auctions that is running or ran this years auctions and give them the heads up on this guy.
And then they should email him or snail mail him at his home address telling him the same thing.
But just a idea, I know no one wants to be the bad guy and likes to keep the peace in the pumpkin growing community, but more and more auctions will be coming up in the near future so this can be nipped in the but right now so all the clubs can put a handle on these non payers.

VT, John; VTMinok: and Brooks...maybe Ken D. would/should be the keeper of the book? I know how much he does already, and KUDO'S to Ken for all he does!!! Maybe?? All auctioneering club's that get non payer's could report them to Ken, and then...if he chooses too...could make them public, or at least to the other club's that are holding auctions?? Sorry Ken, I guess I just dumped all of the responsibility on you, and that was not the intent!!Peace, Wayne

If you can't meet the obligation why bid. It's a waste of every ones time.Sorry that happened to you John

Thanks guys. A few folks have emailed me with the holder of the list and we can resell the seeds at some venue. This is only the 2nd time it is happened to the club in 4 yrs of auctions, so overall the support and honesty of our pumpkin growing community is wonderful! Just really gets me going when there is a promise and than no communication weeks later, very child like. If there is a hardship and a grower can't pay, I don't believe there is a club in the world that would go after the bidder.

Why in the World would anyone be upset about putting that person's screen name and email here other than the bidder?
He didn't have a problem putting you out.

Why add to the work of others keeping track of these non-paying bidders? This person has had ample opportunity to respond. Once they have exceded the time limit for payment just put a "nice" public notice right here.

Thread title: Attention Non-paying bidder "deadbeat1 - [email protected]". "example screen name and email"

Please contact me regarding the bid you placed at the "yadda yadda yadda" auction which is now past due. If arraingements for payment have not been made by "2-20-2010" the seeds you've won in this auction will be sold and you will banned from participating in future auctions.

Sometimes bad things happen in which these people can not make their bids, person wakes up the next day to find out their workplace went belly up or ??. I can see exceptions made in these cases, but it is still their responsibility to make contact with at least an explaination.

I see this year after year here with these auctions. The past practice of not publically announcing these deadbeat bidders has not worked, so maybe it's time to try something new.

I'll agree with that Shaker, If you can't meet the commitment then don't bid at all, we all have things that can come up(Loss of finances, family issues, etc.)However the practice of not honoring your commitment pertaining to the seed auctions is just plain wrong. It's a waste of time for the monitors of the auction. And a downer for the other bidders. It robs the sponsoring club of resources.

If contact hasn't been made by the winner of the bid then the seeds should be put back on to be bought by growers that have the means to honor the obligation. I agree with posting peoples screen names if they flat out don't meet their obligation and I do believe that they should be banned then put on a Probationary status as far as bidding in future auctions. Things like this are so unlike pumpkin growers....

John, let me know somehow(email, message here, at the meeting on Saturday) which lot wasn't paid for. For the second year in a row, great seeds went for bargain-basement prices at the VGVGA auction, and I would be willing to pay the winning bid price for the seeds that weren't paid for if the amount is within my budget.

Strength and honor.

John,

Dave Garrell & I ran the CT GS&PGA Auction with our accountant behind the scenes. We attribute PAYPAL and great communication with our very good results this year.

That aside, all the club seed auction Chair-people need to share the deadbeat list PRIVATELY without resorting to public humiliation here on the message boards.

Most auction patrons really want to come clean (I believe).

We can get a long very nicely with out this type.
Post their names

I have shared the individual's information with other auction coordinators and it is a done deal. I to believe that 99% of all bidders are there to help the club out in return for some nice seeds. The seeds not purchased will wait for another year Steve M. so no worries. Steve J. I set up Paypal for the first time this year and worked great and our overall support was excellent.
