Just a curious question for everyone. What seed would you plant if you had unlimited access to any seed past or present, And what would you cross it with.

a lot of great crosses available today. every plant we put in we have an expectation that it could grow a world record. be it a proven or unproven seed.
this year i feel the following seeds would provide me that opportunity. unfortunately there are many more i feel great about but only have room and energy to tend four plants.
1288 wallace proven to go over 1,600 lbs 1596 wallace unproven yet genetics there to equal any of my other three. 1161 rodonis proven to go almost 1,600 lbs (see above ) 1385 jutras proven to grow 1,725 lbs --- need i say more

Pap is right, but what is the next step for 1800+ What crosses of these greats will make the new hot seed?

1019 Grande......Why....because we had the best Colorado growers forever trying to break the 1100 lb level....Forever.....Then boom....first and only seed ever planted out of the 1019 Grande takes the State Record at 1283 lbs....beating the old record of 1135. 148 lbs in a cool season...by a water boy to boot. So this seed haZ great potential......and I'm planting one......RU?

Good points by all. I would just add, I subscribe to the "largest offspring theory", (I just made that up).
That is, 1385 grew the largest ever. But that particular 1385 could have been the best of all the 1385's out there... and it passed it's genes to the 1725.
In reality, it's not quite that. That is, the soil and the grower made the fruit, in addition to the seed. If you don't have world-class dedication and technique, the seed won't make up for that.

I'm going to assume the 12385 Jutras listed as a parent of the 1019 Grande in the RMGVG pdf is actually the 1385 Jutras.

Well my 2 favorite seeds for the next big seeds are the 1596 Wallace and the 1421.5 Stelts and they will be growing and crossed with each other in my patch this year. Also the 1236 vincent/mcgill squash. Lots and lots of great blood lines here!!!

Like I've been told many times, any seed could break the World Record, it just takes the right grower.
Though I'd do anything for a seed like:
-1596 Wallace. -901 Stelts -904 Hunt

i like ron's way of thinking pap. the 901 and the 991 will be grown here and crossed both ways if possible. not saying i am going to break the world record, but i feel they have the genetics to do so. also, if you cross them on paper, you will end up with each of the 845, 846, 723, and 898 genetics on both female and male sides. that is the backbone of most top notch crosses represented on both male and female sides in one cross. pretty sweet if you ask me. next year i plan on kicking some 1725 pollen into one of the 991 x 901 crosses for the last punch of power to finish the crossing strategy.
so the 1385, 991, 901, 1161, and 1725 are my top 5 picks to do the job of producing the next new world record.

1) "any seed could break the World Record" -- with the genetics out there today, have to agree with that. 2) "it just takes the right grower" -- certainly soil prep, planning, care, and hard work on the grower is a key factor, the fact remains that no grower except early pioneers Dill and Warnock has ever repeated world records. If it was truely in the hands of the grower, we would see repeats as you do in other sports. 3) Lots of people are betting on and will be planting 1385 based genetics so it has a big chance to repete based on probability alone. But don't be suprised if a Young, Wallace, Rodonis, Leggit (my favorite), Connely (another favorite), Steltz, Hunt, or um maybe a Grande (don't want to get on Wiz's bad side and be called a water boy LOL) post the big numbers next year. Knowing that anyone can pull out a big win is what makes it such an exciting sport!

I think, after some research on the heirarcy charts on aggc., To look for a seed that constsntly throws offsprings that go heavey, and to my current research, the 1207 Young seems to throw the most consistantly heavey offspring. But, I have not researched them all....yet...but so far the 1207 really throws heaveys. And it shall be in my patch for 2010.

Hoping this sounds friendly, and I found this comment very interesting!!! "If it was truely in the hands of the grower, we would see repeats as you do in other sports." I truly believe that why we don't see repeats...is because bp.com has leveled the playing field!!! God Bless, Howard Dill, and all he did to advance this obsession!!! But in his day he was "One of a KIND!!!" Yes there were others, but very few...today??? Tens, Hundreds, Thousands...getting Extreme like Howard did??? Just My Humble Opinion!! Peace, Wayne

All good points I personally would agree with all the posts here. I do believe that the 1596 Wallace will be a hot see. It has the 1161 Rodonis and the 1068 Wallace in it both have produced heavy off spring. The future is so exciting in this hobby. Wonder what records may fall and what seed will be the next sought out genetics. One thing that I have noticed is that many of the seeds that where named where from all the top growers. I do believe that Genetics play a major role however the work involved by these heavy hitters is the real over riding factors. Soil soup and myco, not to mention the soil testing and amendments added everything done for the best possible outcome. I like the Rodonis 1068 it has the 1161 and the 1385 both have proved to have heavy off spring.I'll be planting that seed this year along with a few others. I don't have the room but I will certainly try to get it in there....

my 20 cnts for this tread! i think the seeds that can broke the wall of the harp are an harp seed! the 1236 Harp (998.6 Pukos x 1385.5 Jutras) i'm looking for this seeds because i think this is one of the best possible cross! have the power of the best(at today )1385.5 and the proven power of the 998.6 thepumkis are perfect and absolutely crack free(internaly) so....if i find it... it will surely see the dirt and at weight off time we will see the result..(hope a good result)

Really big on the 901 as well. after growing the 901 last year..have to go with her again, its the real deal.. the crosses Don Young made in 09 as well as the Wallace 09 seeds are hard to pass up on.anyone of thoses seeds could bust the scales in Oct. 1421 Stelts will see tons of dirt as well, could be the next "Hot Seed". ohh and the .....list goes on and on, lot of good croses that could bring home the money.

i think the 762 rodonis(1450 x 1566) 1258 wallace(1450 x 1385) 1180 pukos (1068 x 998) will grow some biggun this year if enough of them are planted by the right people.

I also think the 1180.5 Pukos will grow some monsters this year as it wan't planted that much...until now.
I plan on crossing the 901 Hunt into the 1180

95% of the best seeds grown will not grow a world record, you need location, location, experience, and then the seed. But if I was to pick the seed, I still like the 1231 Pukos

Well mt thought is that if the 1467 Perham can get a kin to go 35% heavy and some of the other that where grown where in the upper teens to mid 20's you might want to think if someone was to grow a kin that measured say 1550 ish and went at least 25 -30 % heavy you be looking at roughly 1937 lbs at just 25 % heavy. So I would roll my dice with either the 901 Hunt or 1467 Perham

This year was my first year growing these pumpkins. I've learned so much in one year doing it alone. I planted the 1180 Pukos and it was healthy and trouble free with the exception of a mouse that took some bites out of it. The pumpkin stopped growing a month before picking. It was rock solid and was crackled all over. I do believe that if it had continued to grow I'd have a pumpkin over 1000 lbs it ended up with a final weight of 679. going 30% heavy. I like that seed. While it was growing you could see the growth. no splits and it grew even and a round shape. I grew it in a small corner of the yard and it did the right things. I crossed it with the Holland 1289. Hope to get another 1180 again.....

As far as the 1467 Perham, if you want heavy, I think I'd plant the 1355 Kilburn that was grown from it instead. Not all seeds from the 1467 are going to go that heavy. At least you know with the 1355 you got genes that throw extra-heavy fruit. Don't know what effect the 1507 Jutras pollinator will have though.
