You need a good strong trellis and plenty of sun. You need good air movement to prevent fungus diseases. Being a vine crop they have a lot of the same needs and pest problems as AG's.

Jess, long gourds are a blast to grow. Last year, my rookie year, the cost of my trellis was no more that the price of three 4x8 sheets of lattice. You can spend as much or as little as you want. The 85.5 is 122 Eaton x sibb. The 122 is 88 eaton x sibb and hopefully the 85.5 will carry the same easy to germ qualities as the ancestors. All 6 122 Eaton seeds popped while it was hit and miss with the others. Good Luck.

One lesson I learned the hard way. When you get a good one growing, make sure you use a stretchy fabric to tie it onto the trellis so it won't fall off and break. I lost my best one ever that way.
