If you're growing them for maximum size, it's too late to start them for next season. You need to start them mid December or earlier for really big ones.

I'm trying onions this year also, it will be a trial. You may want to post on the European message board, they are the experts.

I grew onions from seed last year and was very satisfied with the results, having heard that ones from sets will never get very big. I grew 100 each of Ailsa (sp?) and candy hybrid. I started them from seed in March and the result was a large bushel basket of huge delicious onions.Right now,I am just finishing up the Ailsa and starting into the candy hybrid. Some of the Ailsa are starting to sprout,so their storage time is limited, but the storage place is too warm really. Most of them ended up to be softball size, like the giant ones you see in stores. The candy hybrid are good for storage, size and taste and right now they are still hard as a rock!

A question:
CM, I started Ailsa seeds the 2nd week of January, the seedlings are about 1 inch high. Being in a warm climate what are the chances?
