Top Growers Big Weight Gains
After reading through a post Brooks B. posted a little while back about ‘The Secret” I went through and did a little research on the AGGC (Great Site!!). I found that if you look at just about all off the growers in the 1600’s you will see they had a pretty big weight gain from one year to the next ranging from about 400 lbs to almost 600lbs. That is a pretty darn big jump in weight gain from one year to the next, and the fact that it happened to just about all of the 1600+lbs growers most likely means one of two things either they got really lucky or they discovered a new piece of information “The Secret” that helped them drastically increase weights from one year to the next.
Then if you take a few growers that after they had this massive weight gain from one year to the next they where able to continue to produce monsters the following years just confirms they know something. “The Secret”
Also, another coincidence I noticed when you get newer growers which in no way have the practical experience of growing monster AG’s pop out monsters there first or second year, if you take a look at the seeds they grew most of them came from the same grower which just happens to be a grower of monsters.
I am going to talk to Brooks to see if he cracked the code on this Secret of big weight gains.

If you find out any secrets, please send them to me. I'd like to grow at least a couple 1,600+ this year. LOL

if everything else a particular grower does is considered equal? a good portion of the time that couple hundred pounds difference from year to year is related to ------ MOTHER NATURE ,especially in aug and sept.
for example last season our pumpkins in ri were a couple hundred poundss (plus) behind our normal numbers come august 1st. a great weather pattern in august and sept helped make up that difference. leaving us to ponder what may have been had june and july been better.
no magic bullet needed. just a lot of hard work, a well balance disease free soil, seeds that have the potential to go heavy, full sun and some help from mother nature.

Here's my take. NO SILVER BULLET.
Listen to other growers...always keeping an open mind. BE A SPONGE. Learn learn learn.
Hard work period. You don't grow 1500++ working in the patch a couple days a week.
Luck.
Soil...again listen to advise from others. Soil is 1000x more important than seed.
Weather.
Luck.
Seed.
Luck.
The good news is the harder you try the luckier you get. The bad news is the biggest pumpkin seem to come from some VERY VERY high budget patches.

What I have seen from the top growers is.
total commitment to details, doing things throughout the year that will improve their chances, Getting their soil perfect. experimenting with newer techniques. Researching and planting seeds that have the best genetics and have a proven record of success for the region that there in. Networking with other growers to see what works best. And then there's the old weather factor. This year was wet to say the least at least here in New England. I wonder what would have taken place if Mr. Sunshine came out more often during June and July.
I must say that most top growers are totally anal when it comes to growing. SOIL TESTING And prep. Weeding setting up heating cables, Greenhouse, shade structures, protecting the stumps, burying vines adding myco, Compost tea, Good fertiizer program, Fungus and pesticide control, getting rid of Mr. Foamy, Watering.
That's just the basic. I'm interested in the C02 products that has come out. they seems to have some promise in the hobby.Hope to see more about them.
