When I first started growing I never used to think there was no real harm to posting pics of seeds online of some very popular seeds, but since then I have changed my mind a great deal over the years about this and can see where other growers of that seed can take offence to this.

I myself dont think its a good idea to post pictures of seeds online for other ''not so honest'' growers to counterfeit and copy.
By not posting a pic of a seed it will make it just a tad bit harder for them if they dont know what the seed looks like.

Just wondering what you guys think about this?

Not to sure Brooks, though since this'll be my 3rd year growing, I haven't really thought to much about it. I'm sure in a few year I'll see what your talking about.

wow. im still new but ive read alot of the threads from years past regarding this topic. that seems like a great idea .what about marking the seeds in a way that is not obvious.although not totally fool proof it might be a deterrant [i know i spelled that wrong].also if a bunk seed exchange can be confirmed than that persons name should posted here. just like they do in stores when folks write bad checks. shame and humiliate em

unfortunately there are a lot more bogus seed traders out there then many realize. some bogus trader names might shock you as well.

most of the deceptive trading goes on amoungst newer growers who are easy prey for these low lifes.

theres a way around all of this. grow seeds you receive directly from the owner/grower?, or purchase seeds at auction from clubs that the owner/grower belongs to.

when you start seed swapping/trading from grower to grower thats where the biggest possibility of dishonesty exists.

If the seeds were numbered or written on as many growers now do, posting pics of the seeds could help keep track of where they are and which ones are left.
Say i planted a 1068 this year and it was #34. I post a pic of that seed in my diary before I germinate it and now we know that seed is gone from the pool. So if you get a 1068 #32 you Know it's a fake because #32 has already been grown.

We should make a "scammers list".

Of those caught selling generic AG seeds with numbers of say a 1068, then we can spread their names far and wide.

If someone is offering to sell seeds, then we just check their name on the list.

If the name shows up on the list, no deal. That simple.

I am 100% sure that anyone who has ever been scammed out of their money for a seed did not forget who they got it from. We should let others know too!

i like the "scammers list" idea. can you imagine gettin a seed in say jan. or feb. and putting a winters worth of hope and anticipation into a bogus seed. or worse you dont find out it is bogus until july or oct.man i would be spun into a new demention of ticked off.somebody would def get a black eye ... i mean that

Be careful with the scammers list. The 10 years I've been on this site I've seen a lot of guilty people punked out. People you knew without a shadow of a doubt were guilty, but the minute their name was posted you would have the bleeding hearts posting all their great values & how you should be ashamed for thinking such things. And normally the bleeding hearts were accomplices with agendas or folks who only knew them thru e-mails & chatrooms ( they didn't know them).
And then the person who punked them out ends up looking like the ass.

Huff, Absolutely something to be very careful with.

The evidence would have to be concrete and obvious with no wriggle room for the bleeding hearts.

I think we need a Seed Trade Forum where all people involved in a trade must reply to the thread, and all aspects of the trade are known from the beginning to the end. A Seed Trade Forum could make it a lot easier to distinguish trends of dishonesty associated with a particular person trading seeds. Just my two cents.

Brooks, I bought two seeds from differant auctions. both 1207 Youngs.. one seed was marked one way ,the other a nother way. I traded one with a outstanding grower it was marked so only Mr Young could verify it. So if this method was done by growers , it might be hard to scam people. I know a lot of work.. But not to much work for a HH like Don. I like the special marking , because it makes me as a buyer and (AUCTIONS ONLY) Trader fell better...Bill

I agree Pap, I agree 100%.

I only know a handful of growers on this site that I ether know 100% sure they have done some fake trades, or have heard about from some very reliable growers about there past bad seed trading habbits, when ever I would see these people make a post for a trade or hear they might be trading with someone I always make it a point to warn them by private email to be very careful of the trade they are about to do.
I definitely would want someone to do that for me.

I do always try to get the seed first from the original grower, always, but there is times we cant always do that, especially like a seed like a 1068 Wallace, 1385 Jutras or 998 Pukos now a days.
So there is sometimes when you go looking for that seed you will have to do a little research about a grower that has had it in their hands before.
I only trade with a handful of growers anyway, and usually always if im only 99% sure that the seed is the real deal I will still send that proven seed to the grower himself (or sometimes scan it) to verify for me the other 1% that I wasn't sure about it being the real deal.
I will say this though, I will not trade a seed with someone that I know its been in 2 or 3 peoples hands before it hits mine, if the seed hasnt come directly from the grower to them I will not do that trade. So not always you can get that seed directly from the grower. So stick with the trusted few you have traded with for years, and usually you wont have anything to worry about.

But when in doubt send the seed to the grower who grew that seed and have them verify it. And that is what I would call a seed that is 100% verifiable, if its come from the grower himself, or has just been in that growers hands himself that he has verified it. So when growers post the seed is 100% verified you better make sure yourself first, because that is always the case when they list a great seed in that manner. IMO

Don't trade seeds....ever. If you must, make sure to ask the grower who gave it to you. Then make sure the custodial record stays straight.

Trading a traded seed is just asking for trouble.

These aren't baseball cards.
