Take the 1385 Jutras which grew the new record 1725. The 1385 contained world record pollen from the 998 that grew 1689. Should we expect that one of Christy and Nicks other crosses made where they used the 1725 plants' pollen be the creator of the next record? Perhaps the 985 Werner x 1385 Jutras or 998 Pukos x 1385 Jutras (where world record pollen was used)..??? Ideas??

Good one Alex, I like all 3 of the Harp seeds that have the 1385 in it. I myself was never good at growing selfed seeds, never. But the more I keep looking at that 1725 the more I want to grow it, and will. I told myself a while ago I would never grow a selfed seed again because of the personal bad luck I have had with them,,,,, but growing a selfed seed from a huge 1725 lb pound pumpkin that is a world record and that also has the previous world record pollen in it that was also grown by a great pumpkin buddy,, how could you not plant a seed like that.
It would be way to hard for me to let this seed sit in my seed box for another year to watch and see how it does and then grow it. Its gotta go in the ground this year! I like surprises!

The 1316 harp seed looks better to me on paper than the 1236 harp seed. However ,the few pictures Ive seen suggests the 1236 was structurally cleaner than the 1316.Anybody see both those pumpkins in person want to chime in on which of those two fruit they like?Sorry its cold here too brooks

Brooks, since you are an expert grower of selfed seeds, I have a question for you. Have you ever grown 2 different selfed seeds, crossed the two and then planted their offspring the following year? P.S. growing sefed seeds is fun, but I've not had any luck either. I do have a couple selfed seeds I would like to cross, but I don't have a bunch of room to grow "what if" crosses. Any insight is greatlty appreciated.

I am also excited to see the reults of those who grow the 1725. There has been little interest by folks in growing selfed stuff, but there is always someone who is willing to grow a WR seed. Maybe this will be the year that turns opinions around if the results are fantastic?

Cujo,
I saw Christy's 1236 when it first arrived on the truck at the weigh-off in Indiana. Man it even looked huge on the truck. Very nice shaped pumpkin, good color. It looked like an actual pumpkin, it just happened to be super-sized.
I would like to get a hold of another 1236 Harp seed. If anyone has an extra seed that they would be willing to part with, I would be greatful. I can guarantee it will be in the ground!!(looking to do a specific cross.)
Thanks, Mark

what about crossing the 1725 with say a 1402 Bos or a 1068 Papez?? or any of the other self/sibbed 1068 Wallaces? Or is a person better off crossing another 1385 back into the 1725...

cojoe, nick himself said he would recommend the 1236 over the 1316 anyday. the 1316 had a lot of internal cracks and a dill ring. the 1236 was internally flawless.

1356.5 Reid 09(1370 Rose X self) X 1725 Harp 09 could be a very good cross IMO.
The 1356.5 was about 15% over the chart.
With all the success certain 1370 X 1068 crosses are having, I think this could be a good cross to consider.

okiegal, it took me 12 hours to figure out why you posted a comment about morning sickness on a thread about seed choices and snowdays.
then it hit me! you thought i wanted a day off work BECAUSE i have morning sickness!! couldnt be further from the truth!!
for all you non-teahers....
there is nothing, nothing, NOTHING in the world like the anticipation of waking up to a white wonderful world, looking at the trecherous streets, praying to hear "JACKSON LOCAL SCHOOLS ARE CLOSED" on the radio / tv screen / phone call. Then it happens! Your dreams come true!! Ah yes, a Friday off, sleep in until 9 and then pick one or all of my fav winter activities to fill my day: snowmobiling, sledriding, cross country skiing, ice-skating, and then just plain loafing.
HEAVEN ON EARTH!!
Not the reason I became a teacher, but definitley one of the top 3 fav things about being a teacher :)
Dad always says, "people with REAL jobs dont get snowdays," and I respond, "good thing I don't have a real job!!".

Christy, how I remember those great early morning radio announcements. Rumour has it that certain teachers and especially students in this area have developed something they call the "snow-dance". Apparently you have to go outside in your pj's the night before, twirl around three times as you invoke the power of the snow-gods chanting "no school tomorrow, no school tomorrow, no school tomorrow"...good luck with this....lol...Bill P.S. Be careful not all of your neighbours may share your enthusiasm for this dance!!!!
