Just wondering if anyone took pictures of Dave Stelts 1662's (904 stelts) stump that he brought to the OVGPG weigh off this year, and if you did could you please post the pics.

I want you guys to see the size of this stump, its the biggest tree trunk of a stump I have ever seen, and Im sure once you guys see it(if there is any pics out there) you will totally agree. Just ask Andy Wolf if you dont believe me, cause I know he has seen alot more stumps then me in his travels across the US,,lol

I seen some big stumps before by growers but never like the size of the one Dave grew his 1662 off of (the 904 Stelts plant). you guys gotta see it, it will totally amaze you trust me, It doesnt even look real,,,,lol

Andy, do you have any pics of it?,, I had some on my cell phone but lost the pics.

No pics here, I just checked.

I actually prefer smaller stumps. Large stumps like that one indicate disease in my experience. The biggest stump i've ever had here was a foamer that busted apart and got all gnarly. I don't think Dave's foamed, but it appears he pushed that plant to the tipping point. It just didn't look healthy, and with as much cracking as it had, I gotta wonder how the pumpkin would have finished if all the veins in the stump would have stayed connected in regular formation. Can't argue with results, but everything else being equal I would rather see them smaller than a pop can here.

I remember it well Brooks ( I had stump envy). And if you ever get the chance to visit Bob Liggett's patch in late summer the same feeling will get you there as well.

That's the one that grew my 1407. Probably only a quarter (if that) of the size of Dave's. His pumpkin was bigger, but then again, Both the 1407 and 1662 were #3 in the world the year they were grown, both 62-63 pounds behind the WR that year. Freaky.

I will check again for a pic but I was pretty busy that day, I did weigh it and it was 44 pounds.

Andy is right Mr. Foamy makes very big stumps and that stump was a foamer. I did fillet it open as soon as it started to leak and kept it pretty dry from there on out. The vine and roots all looked good at harvest and have to thank Ron W. & Quinn for the advice.

LOL @ Brooks.
I was standing there listening to you, Dave and Tim talk about the stump while I was gawking at it.
That thing was GINORMOUS! It was the size of a Bosworth leg! No way I could leave there without a pic of it.

Thanks cojoe!
I doubt you'll find better coverage of the OVGPG weigh-off. I've been covering it for the past three years.

Had a good sized stump on my 1142 Van Kooten plant this year. Almost 12" diameter. Pumpkin didn't get to 1662 but did grow a solid 997.5.

Frank, the picture does it no justice,,lol,, Im holding onto the skinny part of the stump/vine, the biggest part(the main stump) is back behind me in that pic, it was so big it had bark peeling off it with a wood pecker living inside,,,lol! just wish i hadn't lost the pics, i had alot of close up pics of it.

Duane, if you dont mind could you post that pic in your bp.com diary or the photo gallery? a couple guys emailed me and said they cant find it on your web site for some reason. I told them all they have to do is sign up on your site to see it, its like the bp.com site, is free and painless to sign up I told them,,lol

Just to let every one know what happened to the stump I had Carol split it up & stack it. Now we are enjoying warm winter nights from the fire we make from it in our wood burner... I mean pumpkin stump burner.

its important to get them split before winter so they will air dry first carol needs a 3 point splitter dave alot less work. julie grinds mine ours with stump grinder and loads chips on dump truck then back fills holes

I'm more impressed with how that 1662.5 itself looked. That has to be one of the nicest looking pumpkins ever grown, as in orange with nice shape, and going heavy as well at 1662.5 is awesome. Its harder to find pics of that one on the net though.

What did you ever do with her Dave? Was she carved into a giant red Jack-O-Lantern?
