as the holidays have arrived, i have run into friends from long ago who are in town for Christmas and have no idea what i have been doing for the last 8 years. as far as they know, i am still a normal human being.
and then someone in the group says, "did you know shaz grows giant pumpkins now?" and they say what are you talking about.
and then there comes the look. you have to explain the unexplainable. yes....i now grow giant pumpkins.....and then the stories unfold....lol....it is so hard to explain how or why....but if they know you...they always know you had it in you...i love the holidays...merry christmas

I don't have to explain it. I wear a ballcap that says Circleville on the front & Pumpkin Show on the back and no matter where in the state I am people will see it & ask if I'm from Circleville. When I tell them yes the talk always turns to the pumpkin show & then I tell them I grow the giants, from there the conversation goes on for at least 15 more minutes. Darryl Crosby can back me up on this when I say the weighoff is like a class reunion. In other states they may look at you funny, In the Circleville area...We are GODS!!!....LOL

I was in the Mall of America once when from one floor up John Doucet yelled "Shannon". He recognized my Linus Van Pelt #20 Hat.

Shazzy - I get the same stuff.....my passion used to be powerlifting and I have people ask "how does one go from powerlifting to growing pumpkins?"
I really never have a good answer..........but I sure enjoy it.

I started growing AGs because of my grandson. His mother and father are now divorced, and that's troubling him greatly. To see that smile on his face instead of tears rolling from his eyes, all because of a big pumpkin. Can you beleive it a pumpkin having that kind of power!!! It's just a big pumpkin, right?

When I call my folks to see how they are, and my dad ASKS if I'm going to grow another big pumpkin; I'm past point of no return. :)
I start out with I'm into 'extreme gardening' OR that I do 'competition growing'. That makes it a teensy bit easier to explain further about how I am so into those big orange things, heh. [if the words 'forklift' and 'harvest' aren't in the same sentence, you're not GROWING!]

Yes our class reunions are always during Pumpkin Show as most of our class is in town for it. Huff and I grew up watching all the pumpkins get bigger every year at the show and now we are the ones growing them bigger every year. At least no one from our class forgets us.

growing and tending a giant pumpkin in your patch is second to none.at my age its even better than sex. less work to, plus i can still have a smoke afterwards --lol
in spite of all the setbacks, the hail, the cold springs, green houses up-greenhouses down, wind protection up-wind protection down, the hot humid summers, the bugs, the diseases, the critters, and those friggin nozy passers by_lol, i would not trade it for anything.some of my lifes best friends have been made since i got into this hobby twenty something years ago.
i will continue to strive for bigger and better until i no longer can do it. aside from that ? im normal i guess???????????
lol pap

LOL@ Ed !!! We're mutants. There's something wrong with us, something very, very wrong with us. Something seriously wrong with us - we're punkin growers. But we're American punkin growers! We've been hefting punkins for 20 years! We're awesome! Now we don't have to worry about whether or not we weeded. We don't have to worry about whether Captain Stelts wants to have us hung. All we have to do is to be the great American punkin grower that is inside each one of us. Now do what I do, and say what I say. And make me proud.

Mutants are more fun! Both AG's and AG growers are freaks of nature! But how can something so wrong with us feel so right?

we are all struck with a passion...unexplainable as it may be,it is however a passion. A life without passion is a terrible thing in my opinion. So let's all just enjoy and pursue our passion and always come up smiling.
