Kenny made that comment. I've encountered growers who collect seeds like baseball cards. 100, 500, 1000 and even more. But often, they've won raffles and received a whole box of seed envelopes too.
However, growers also collect seed to be in a better position to trade. What would a grower have to be able to offer from their collection for a 1385 Jutras right now?
More basic, how can a grower get rid of good seed? A grower's insecurity being, what if they change their mind next season and no longer have it?
When one of my 1385's is the 1449.5 Traylor, I guess what I want to say to Kenny is, if he can't get the original seeds he wants, don't overlook some of the great crosses other growers made from them too.

My point is to ask how many growers agree?

I'd have to agree with you GiantJack - sure it is a shame when good seeds are just sitting in a freezer instead of being planted but then you can't really blame someone that was connected or lucky enough to get a few of a seed (or spent the money to get it!) that turned out to be highly prized, wanting to hold onto it until they are ready to plant it or as you say to try and make a trade for the seeds they want to actually plant. (I think everyone would have to agree that it is much easier to obtain the seed(s) that you desire if you happen to have the one everyone is seeking !!).

But also as a new grower, I'd have to say that there are so many other seeds that are the same genetics or similar variations that are available and go untested as well - That if you do some research you can find ones that are close to what you are looking for and have the same chance of growing a big one (or Orange one depending on what you are searching for !)that if you can't find (or afford) the one that you really want you can usually come pretty close and may even wind up with the next hot seed.

For example as a first year grower I was able to get seeds with several great crosses like a 1385 Jutras x 1502 Wallace and the reverse cross (which I plan to recross with each other for 2011 if all goes well) and also the 1180.5 Pukos x 998 Werner and a 1290 Poirier x 1102 Pukos - all for the cost of a few SASBEs (Thanks to the Friendly and supportive of members of this forum) - sure they may be untested seed but with genetics like that how can a person not be excited to grow them.

Maybe I'm missing something as a new grower and maybe in a few years I'll be willing to pay the $500 to get a single seed that I really want (though I still think most of the willingness to pay that kind of money is more the wanting to help support the club and being able to than actually getting the seed !) but for now being able to get such great genetics for the cost of a SASBE and then being able to decide on what crosses to make with them to test for the next season is hard to beat !!

What you are saying giant jack is the point i was trying to make. After reading my original post i can see that the wording missed the point that i was trying to make. I failed at that, to many shots to the head.

I last year I was a bubble junkie. I am only sending out a few thsi year. I look thru my seeds and I have so many with potential. They havn't been grown and they don't have a big name next to them. I feel the genetics are out there for the cost of Bubble and postage.

I agree with JD's post. I can't afford or want to afford a $500 seed. I'm glad that people can because it does help the clubs. This was my first year growing so I didn't have a lot of good genetics until I requested a few seeds from the very nice people here. Every seed I requested I have a plan for, it may not be planted in 2010 but it will get planted. I think the problem in seed collecting is how the seed is acquired. I think it is wrong if you hint, promise or otherwise mislead the growing into thinking you will grow the see you are requesting. If you are one to request a ton of seeds each year and then decide not to grow some of them, you should offer to give it back to the grower or donate it to your local club. If you acquired the seed through an auction, seed raffle or club seed pack then the seed is yours to do whatever you want with it. Just my 2 cents.

Not all people keep seeds just to make a buck off them.
I watch every year Eddy the ''Iceman'' spend thousands of dollars at auctions each year and then turn around and give that 500 seed that 300 , that 200 dollar seed away for absolutely NOTHING to guys that have no chance of obtaining a great seed. He does it year in and year out, and I bet you cant count on your fingers and toes just how many great proven seeds this guy has given out. You wont find very many guys like that in this world.

Let's get real. People can only plant so many seeds. There are way too many great seeds and not enough people to plant them. I know that if you really want a particular seed, you should try to plant it, but there will still remain a ton of seeds with loads of potential that won't be planted. Also, if there's a particular seed that you put off planting for a number of years, by the time you get around to planting it, there's a bunch more seeds that have better potential. It's like computers. You can buy the best technology available, and within a year or two, it's obsolete.

Mr. Bozz, you nailed it!!!I got one of those "wished for" seeds from...yes you nailed it "Eddy" the Iceman!!! Walked in the front door...of the hotel in Niagara...and received a "wanted" seed!!! Eddy said..."as long as it put's a smile one yer face!!! It is yours!!!!!" Peace, Wayne
PS...I have donated most (or at least a lot of my better seeds that I have purchased at auctions, into the KPM (sorry) KGPG auction for this year!!!! Lots of lot's of good stuff!!!!

echo what CM said! The seeds I've requested and purchased I plan to plant. Seed prospecting seems a poor venture, you'ld be better digging for gold.

Sure, if planning on growing the next WR, stacking the deck seems the way to go, but the fact is knowbody can predict what the next WR AG will be grown from. And nobody in recent history has been able to repete a WR! And so odds are it will be someone new, with some new seed.

As CM said, there are more seeds out there than growers. I have gotten requests from growers in the past for seeds from a particular cross I've made and like most other growers, I stuff the envelope with some of everything from the patch. You end up with a lot of seeds you could never plant. It would take me years to plant out everything my own patch has produced even if I only planted my own. Now that I've been at this I while I make very few requests and get most of my seeds from the club distribution and sales and plant my own and some of the older ones.
