I've tilled my patch, ammended accordingly, tilled again and have spread down and raked in, fall rye according to the directions on the bag.

Directions say 5 lbs per 500 sq. ft. of soil.

Question is: How much do the rest of you use when sowing your fall rye crop?

I sowed annual rye on my garden this fall. I'm giving just a rough estimate/guess. But I'd say I sowed approx. 2 lbs./500 sq. ft. It coming in decent, not real thick though.

5 lbs for 500 sq??????????? WAY too much.

60-120 lbs/acre = 1.3 lbs/500 sf at the high rate.

Even though it is raked in, the birds are enjoying it!

I used 5 lbs of winter rye for around 1800sq/ft. The coverage looks good.

I used 50 lbs on 10,000 sq.ft. because I had 10,000 sq.ft. and the bag was 50 lbs.

I use 3lbs for 1000 sq ft and that is still a bit to much. You don't want the rye thick so it looks like a lawn.

Is there any harm in sowing at to higher rate? I would have thought to light a bigger worry.

The only harm from sowing Winter Rye too heavy will come next spring to your back, the raking after it's tilled will be messy.

IF that's really winter rye. Here in the US the seed laws require the Latin name & other details of trade.
