what is the latest that you can start one? also, i may decide to add a few inches of shredded leaves this fall. does that need to be done before or after sowing the cover crop? thanks -jim

As long as it is above 33 degrees you can get it to grow. However when it is that cold the rye will grow, but very slowly. The leafs should go in and get tilled in before you plant the rye. If you have some left over myco then spread it out real thin then rake in your rye seed. It help increas myco in the soil overall.

It might be too late now to get any growth before winter sets in, but winter rye is pretty tough. Even if you plant it now and don't see any growth, it may still come up in the spring. With the nice November we've been having, my rye is 2 inches tall and didn't get planted until just before Halloween. When conditions are right it can put on a nice growth spurt pretty fast.
