Has anyone wondered why pumpkin roots are shallow compared to many other plants? I found-out that most vine plants put out shallower feeder roots, to take better advantage of the richer top layer of soil. The advice was to avoid applying anything at a strong rate and especially avoid using chemical solubles for that reason. It's much easier to burn the feeder roots of vine plants. I just thought it helps make sense of why pumpkins are such lovers of slower and steadier release organics. At least I'm off the kick of trying to make them grow deep.

Plus, it shows why we shouldn't walk around, compacting the top layer of our soil too!

Tall plants need deep root systems as anchors to avoid blowing over. Annual vining crops don't need much permanence. Pumpkin need only enough roots to make a successful bunch of seeds. After which the first frost ends it.
