How can you keep your worm bins alive without bringing them in the house?

I kept mine in the garage this last winter after protests from my wife of keeping it in the basement. I have the worms in a large 50-gallon bin so there is a fair amount of insulation with the compost and castings. The worms survived the winter. I'm sure they would have done better in a warmer place than a garage that can get to 25 degrees on a cold day but they lived.

A good heavyduty heatcable from ExtremePumpkin is $46 but worth it. I'm going to try it this winter in a double coldframe with box inside and heat cable and a brooder light, to keep them alive. NO WAY can I bring my worms in.
