I was washing the pulp off my seeds in a bucket and out of hundreds only one sank to the bottom. Any significance? I put that one aside just in case. I think it may have just been a Red Sox fan.

Drop it if it sounds more hollow than a seeds that did not sink then that seed is empty.

I only put twenty or so in the water at a time then washed them so they weren't in the water long enough to fill with water. I like your theary Donkin. lol.

I had the exact same thing happen! I was washing them in a bowl of soapy water and out of 274 seeds one immediately sank to the bottom. It appears solid and when I bounce it on the table it sounds like a rock.

If I had to venture a guess, I would say the seed simply had an unusually high mineral content. It could have been anything from chemical concentration gradients, to genetic funny business.
Anyway, the greater density does not likely influence plant vigor or potential pumpkin weight. It was just the one which couldn't swim.

I'm betting that's the one that didn't hold it's breath :)
Solid-er than the others, might mean it will take longer to dry.

Shaker, it makes no difference whether a seed is a floater or sinker. We all have them. The sinkers are just a bit denser. Some growers have even seperated seeds from the stem end and blossom end believing the stem end (shoulder) seeds would produce heavier kins.

That's the golden seed and the one you want to plant! Gold is dense and heavier making the seed sink.
