Does anyone know what seed Doc Liggett's big one that's going to Circleville was grown from?

10/19/2009 8:01:47 PM

just bill ( team Pettit )

Adams County

his own 1375 Liggett, if I'm not mistaken

Ohio

correct 1375.5 Which came from his own 1524 and Ken Speakman's 1263.5. Both of these two have Liggett's 664.5 as the female parent. What a great seed that 664.5 I can't wait to see his 1375.5 hit the scale Wednesday.

Dr. Bob has always done well proving his own seeds and that is the philosophy I have begun to follow. What's the point in making what you think is a good cross if you never grow it?

Many factors come into play when developing a good seed: genetic research, soil fertility and conditioning, figuring out what these things like(my biggest challenge), and a lot of luck. This year was one of the best in Ohio from a weather standpoint as long as you were growing north of the Pickaway-Ross county line.

Dr. Bob has experienced both the highs and lows associated with this hobby and, along with Nancy Martin, has always dreamed of bringing the world record home to Circleville.

The scales will be the judge on Wednesday morning. Good luck Bob!

Doc is no doubt a hero, at least in my mind. So what in the heck happened to this year's monster? I was waiting and waiting for it to be weighed and, well, I'm still waiting!

I could'nt ask for a better way to end the season, the world record is broke, there is one left that might break that one.

I heard it took off in a weather balloon but it fell out and smashed in the woods. They found the balloon but no pumpkin. I saw it on the news.

I don't think Doc would let a weather balloon get near his pumpkin. I'm sure he has some kind of high tech surveillance system. lol

question am i right in assuming the pumpkin will be weighed at circleville ? and is this a gpc weigh off ? and if not exactly how does that work. ? hamr

Yes at Circleville, no GPC & it works like it did before the GPC, certified digital scale.
I'm not sure of your question, but if your asking about the current record( 1725) if Doc's is bigger it is a new world record, that part is simple.
But Christy would still be the GPC winner & Orange jacket winner for the year.

if I understand it right the orange jacket isn't given by the gpc, it's given by the group that runs nigeria so it would go to the biggest pumpkin grown in the world no matter were it was weighed.

we are such a pathetic group at times (me included).

Someone said it was still growing a few inches.... not a rumor either.

heres my take, as long as its a certified scale it will be a offical weight. by not being a gpc site the pumpkin will not qualify for gpc money.obviously circleville gives out prizes.and the world record holder will get the orange jacket whoever he or she, lol might be. make sense ? hamr

Ya I second that Hamr.

The group that runs Nigeria keeps trying to get me into some kind of money laundering scheme. And lots of my unknown relatives have died there apparantly and they were all stinking rich. If I had that kind of money I could put more time into growing pumpkins, But somehow if I go for it I think I'll get burned so I'm not touching it. Besides, doesn't President Obama win the orange jacket this year?
