I live in northern Illinois and grow in a community garden plot. They will be plowing the field in about 1 week. I know it is getting late to start a cover crop in my area, but still want to try. I'm looking for any advice to get a successful cover crop established before winter sets in. I think I've narrowed my choices down to Winter Rye, and Hairy Vetch (but I'm open to other suggestions). Which will germinate at a lower temperature? Which will become winter hardy in the shortest amount of time? Any other planting advice is welcomed and appreciated. Thanks in advance, and a great off-season to all!

Winter rye would be my choice. It will also help with early weed pressure next year, as the plant puts out a natural herbicide tht inhubuts small seeded weeds.
