I received an e-mail that helped me realize where I might not be clear. Werner and Rose, just to name 2 growers, have never set world records and Christy beat Jutras, both ways, with his own seed. Is Joe a more skilled grower than Werner and Rose and Christy twice the grower of all 3 of them put together? Of course not, the luckiest top skilled grower is who wins. Both the 1689 and 1385 Jutras have shown how seed is like a litter of puppies. Christy obviously reached in and grabbed the brute of the litter, then with the skill. But if a top grower reaches in and only grabs an average for the litter or the runt? No amount of growing skill can change it was just their luck. I wondered why the top growers thought I was insulting them, when they're the reason that after the skill, I see the luck factor as being 50%. Look at Tailor's luck from last season to this one. I'm sure he didn't get 700 lbs. more skilled over last season with the same seed, even if he got some. #1 is a list, not a position, to me.

I tend to agree, I think "all the stars have to line up" perfectly for the really magical pumpkin to be grown. It takes a ton of skill but without the right seed, weather, and luck it's not going to happen. A lot of variables play into it. I've known growers who set state records their first or second year growing and brought nothing to the scales for 2 or more years afterwards. Go figure.
