Just looked at the GPC results thus far! Our new world record does not have a pollinator listed. Does that mean it was a self pollinated or open pollination? Or it is it a slip up on the posting of the weights? Just curious. Since the emphasis is put on soil and genetics, knowing the lineage would help.

I hope they selfed it. The genetics in that particular 1385 seed are obviously awesome.

we decided to self it as to not "water down" the obvious awesomeness that was occuring at polination time (the plant was over 3 times the size of any other plant in the patch on that date). we feel we made the right choice but i know there will be people who will argue.

Cristy, Please tell me that Nic has some vines off your plant to clone. That would be a great thing.

If anyone argues, give me their seeds. 100% the right decision. You got your other seeds with the 1385 as the pollinator. Who cares if someone doesnt like it.

Being selfed is awesome ... but in the name of science it does need to be cloned!

Nice! Hopefully it has many seeds. They could prove very good in future breeding.

Cristy, how about I send you some funds so you overnight me a couple of cuttings so I can clone (I thinking that what the Wiz has in mind too :P). I would bet I can get more clones from cutings by spring then you have seeds! Hummm anyone ever try tissue culture for pumpkins??? Anyway, that would be a good experiment as we can then see if clones can do as good as the original (meaningfull data!) ... or if it is just your supper awsome growing skills :)

Don't try the tissue culture method. With cucurbita I have found too much missmatch mutation in the callus tissue to make it valuable for what we are doing.

Thanks Nic, that is one nagging question down! It still leaves me whit how much of a giant is do to genetics, ho much to environment, how much to growing skills, and how much is just plain luck (although I really don't believe in the later)

Wow. Selfing causes build-ups of recessive bad genes ! Oh no- it causes the mutations to show up ! Oh no !--it causes lack of vigor ! Ah Geez ! It causes inbreeding problems and thats why squash suck ! Oh no......I'm sorry----I misunderstood again....selfing is only bad if you want to trash a squash...its fine and even desireable if its a pumpkin....my bad.
