The excitment at Park's Garden Center in Canfield today was amazing. Sooooo many huge pumpkins! The feelings of anticipation as the last 10 pumpkins were weighed had the crowd on the edge of their seats. And then....that last and final pumpkin had everyone jumping up and cheering!

This was my first time growing a big pumpkin and first time experiencing a weigh off. It was awesome AND to witness a world record being broken was even more insane. The crowd went wild when the number finally set on the scale. Awesome job Christy!!! I'll be coming to you for advice on growing my 2nd big pumpkin :)

I found this little gem in Christies diary from September 11th, 2009...

"I've had pumpkins on the brain a lot lately (not really losing sleep as some have suggested I must be). I've tried figuring out pumpkin growing for quite a few years now and have never quite done so. Unfortunately this year has done absolutely NOTHING to help me "figure it out". But I have a good hypothesis going. If your name is like Quinn, Jerry, Joe, Jack, Jim, etc etc there are lots, then being a good pumpkin grower is a skill. No doubt about it, they've got mad skillz. Dozens of plants and every plant is spectacular regardless of weather, genetics, or other variables. As far as us mere muggles, pumpkin growing is all about the "LUCKY SEED". If you get a lucky one, you are fortunate, but if you don't then it's just going to be another year in the books and nothing spectacular. So this year we've got 7 plants but only 1 lucky seed in the bunch. Someday I want to replace luck with skillz. AND I CANT FIGURE OUT HOW!!! It certainly isn't going to be this year and most likely not next. I prob won't even grow next year but maybe sometime in the next decade I can acquire the secret (and I do think it's secret) skill."

LOL!!! There are a lot of lessons here. Number one being, don't give up! Christy, I think you figured it out and you do have mad skilz!. Well done.
