Well I went from the highest of highs by setting my PB at 1117Lbs yesterday to the lowest of lows today. I went to cover my squash this evening and found a spot that looked dark under the skin near the top. When I pressed on the spot it seemed soft , I went ahead and pressed hard and my finger went thru. We will find out tomorrow what went wrong when we cut it open, I’m sure something happened internally. It happened fast as we just measured it Friday and it all looked good and then today I found this.
I would like to thank all those that have known about this and supported me along the way. For those of you who don’t know it was tapping out at 1100Lbs and was as green as it gets. I have kept it low key as I didn’t want to get too pumped up because I knew something like this would happen. I’d like to thank all those at the New Bremen weigh-off that talked me into getting it up to the OVGPG weigh-off next week. I had everything set up to take it next week, now all the plans are for nothing. Good luck to the OVGPG next week as I guess I won’t be there now.
Thanks to Dr. Bob who has been helping me tape it after it got too large for me to tape myself. Another thanks goes out to Paul Huffer who has been just as excited about this thing as me. We will pull it out of the patch tomorrow and get an official DMG weight on it with the club scales. My only hope is that it goes light as I don’t want to see a record pumpkin going to waste.
So sorry it couldn’t make it one more week but that’s just my luck. Good luck to all the others out there and I hope no one else has to go thru what I just went thru. I think I need a year or two off now.
Thanks again Darryl

This rain didn't help Darryl. 2 1/2" over the weekend. I pulled my 559 Liggett(orange) yesterday for the same reason, so I know how you feel. I just hope the rest survive to a weighoff. My sympathies bud.

Sorry to hear that Darryl. But you really don't need a year off. Give it some time and then get back to planning for next year.

Darryl, I am sorry to hear the bad news I could tell how excited you were at New Bremen when you were telling me about your squash. If it is still solid enough to travel and make it to the scale come up to Canfield to get a weight on it anyway. Dave

So sorry to hear the news, I was really hoping it would make it to Ohio Valley. But Congratulations anyway, it was still a huge accomplishment! Heidi

Thanks everyone,
We took it out of the patch two days ago and got a weight on it. We found that a rat had been under the pumpkin and chewed a hole in it. This is the first time it 10yrs of growing I have had rat problems( what a time to start) and it had to be now. We got it weighed on the clubs scale and it was 1004.5Lbs. When we cut it open we found its been this way for a couple weeks. Thanks to everyone out there who helped and special thanks to Dr.Bob and Huff for helping me weigh it and get the seeds out.

It had been awhile Darryl, I couldn't believe how dry & moldy it was inside. And you will grow again next year, the sting will eventually go away.

I'm bettin' that, after a long and contemplative winter, the bug hits you again in the spring.
