I think I spent about $150 counting the 4X4's, the chain, and the chainfall. I used a piece of 3/4 Treaded rod inside a piece of 3/4 pipe, with a flat washers and nuts on ends.

I built mine last year, bought the 4 x 4 x 16 ft'r at Lowes, carraige bolt (atleast 12 inches), 2 washers, and a nut to fit, 12 ft chain, threaded clasp, 1 ton hoist, lifting ring assembly, all will run you about 300 bucks total. Lifting rings run about 150 to 175 (see pgpga.com), hoist about 50-60, wood about 60, chain, and bolt assembly another 40-50 bucks.
Believe me, it is well worth it.

Just finished assembling a hybrid design w/black steel pipe, 8' sections sleeved so it'll knock down for easy transport. Stock costs around $175 so far. It won't be worth doo doo if it doesn't pass testing tomorrow...LOL! I'll post results.

I just got done building one.
(3) 16' 4x4's - $18.00 each plus tax 2' long 3/4" threaded bar with washers and nuts - roughly $11.00 Lifting strap about $80.00
Total about $145.00 plus tax.
I got chains and a chain crank hoist from a buddy.
Will test it out Friday evening on my small guy and saturday on my bigger guy.
