This coming season will be my first 'real' attempt at growing giants. I live in a subdivision with limited growing area but I have 36 acres about 10 miles away where I could have a big pumpkin patch. My question is this... would you rather have more vines further away or only two vines next door? I remember how often I ran out to the patch, 5-6 times a day sometimes more. I know I wouldnt be able to watch the vines as closely if they were 10 miles away but would it be worth it to have more vines with more space? I think I already answered my own question LOL but whats your opinion??

Depends on how much time you expect you will have to devote to your plants. I personally grow less plants and smaller plants by growing in my backyard. I have the room to grow about 10 miles from here but it is not worth hauling back and fourth for me.

I'd concentrate most of my efforts at home on your one or two favorite seeds and LEARN, LEARN, LEARN. This does not mean I would not plant a few plants elsewhere as backups because "stinky" happens even with the best care.

Been there....done that.....
Do both....multiple plants at farm and one proper plant for looks at home. Mine would be an orange seed planted between the wife's flower garden I have to tend and the kids swingset I have to babysit....gives the illusion of doing my Daddy job while tending to pumpkins.

Thank you. It didnt even occur to me to do both. Duh me! I could have 2 main plants here and a couple of back ups at the farm. I learned quite a bit of what NOT to do this season, I have 'how to' books in hand and Im getting ready to try it again :)

had a remote patch some 20 years ago, advantage was lots of space, disadvantage it was remote, had no control over vandals or water. prefer to be able just to walk out back and take care of it.

Good thinking Pete! Honestly, I dont know about the soil difference. We bought the farm last yr and havent done anything with it yet, it was used as pasture for cattle. My husband is kinda freaky about turning up the grass too but he agreed to a bigger (back yard) patch this yr :)

I do both. Most years, my pumpkin (this year it is squash) at home is usually the biggest, unless it blows. The "Step-Pumpkins" as they are called, usually don't get as much TLC, but do quite well and give my kids a chance to experience farm life. Do them both if you can.
