Being the number 1 weather whiner in the Seattle area I don't want to hear the complaints from the east about a little rain. My pumpkin patch was lucky enough to be part of the tornado and 100 mph winds and several inches of rain over the weekend. Plants took a little beating; pumpkins all survived. With temps in the mid 50's for the last week growth is not exactly double digits.100 mph winds are common here several times per year, my dogs and I looked out the window and continued the afternoon nap. The train noise should have been an indicator. Tornado's in western Washington; maybe every 20 years. This ain't Illinois. 5 Werners, 2 Jutras, and 1 Hunt among others all survived. For 2010 when deciding on what to plant, add the characteristic of sturdy enough to withstand Tornados and high winds in a single bound. I was lucky, only one tree snapped. Neighbors a couple hundred yards north and on were not as lucky. We set a record this summer by having one night where the temp was above 70 degrees. Never had happened before. Boom Boom's Green and Shiney squash is now about 20% orange and shiney. Can I blame that on the weather? Mr Pugh informed me this morning ; he hopes to to make the top five at Puyallup on Friday. He sandbags, he will be in the top three. Dean Biss goes for the exacta or daily double. Whatever you call a repeat winner for pumpkins. Good luck to all. And Christy; how is the monster doing. Leave today from Ohio and you could be be the big winner here. Lets not forget the Duck crowd from Oregon. They usually try to rain on Hollands parade.

See you there at Puyallup Friday. I'm bringing my little one. It's the easiest to get at in the patch, maybe bring another one as well. That will open some room to get to the fruit I want to take to Scholz. Too many pumpkins and not enough weighoffs, my splitters are still intact. Glad you made it through the storms. My patch did fine down in the Rio Verde valley. But the neighbor behind me lost a big limb off one of their huge maples and the only thing keeping it off my fence is the limbs on my alder supporting it.
