does this give any advantage at all by having your soil warmer even if the air temperatures are pretty chilly in the fall?

too late to put cables in now, but was thinking about next year.

Problem is there's a difference between under a 6x8' hoop and a full vine... it'd warm the soil where you laid it in the spring, true, but.

id guess very little benefit . to much soil area on a full plant. the nase in most cases is already doing very little by late season.

I would like to try soil heating cables placed early under a keeper pumpkin and see how warm it would keep the pumpkin throughout the fall. I know it would be tricky, but with some help it could be done. could work?

Soil heating cables under the pumpkin has come up in a few conversations with some cold climate growers. I think a grower or two was thinking of trying it this year. If I find out results I will let folks know.

My cables have never been turned off, if the soil is below 74 they turn on, i cant see it hurting the stump area.

Pete, I turned mine back on about two weeks ago under the "it can't hurt theroy". There was increased growth after the fact, but warmer weather probably had more to do with it then the cables.

I would like to run a cable the length of the main vine next year and see what happens.

I agree with Tom and ghopson ... it can't hurt but could help so why not. (unless you can't pay the electricity bill)
