Burned hay if local codes permit. Roundup for everywhere else.
If Ontario has banned Roundup then either vinegar or lay clear plastic down for several weeks.

Dave I tilled mine in the fall twice and then it composted all winter and in the spring left some nice organic nitrogen in the soil.

Dave, I expanded my patch last fall. I used Roundup 1st...7-10 days later everything was brown...Added manure, lime/gyspsum..and some 10-10-10 to get the NPK up close enough to adjust in the spring. Then tilled everything under.. and planted a cover crop of Winter Rye. Mark

I've accidentally killed grass several times over the years just by leaving a piece of black plastic sitting on the lawn for too long. No need for chemicals of any kind. If you were to spread some black plastic over the expansion area now then by the end of October most of the grass will be dead. Any that survives would be so severely weakened it would easily be killed upon tilling.

Wait for a rainy spell in early spring. Fertilize with a moss killer and fert, then one week later spray weed killer. Let the sun come out and get hot for the next three days after applying the weed killer. This process got me out of an entire summer of mowing my front lawn. It killed the weeds, the grass, and even the rocks looked sick. Unfortunately I did have to replant the whole thing and the prep for that turned out to be more work than the mowing.
