I am starting to see some dark areas on a couple of stems. Is stem rot starting? or am I paranoid? It may be just slightly soft by touch. What should I do? One more inch of rain last night and a couple downpours today, but the next several days are to be dry. Mark

Daconil, paint it on straight from the bottle.

Thanks Brooks, I have some Bravo Weatherstik (Chlorothalonil) and a paint brush. I will go to painting after the rain stops and the front goes through.

Daconil has worked for me too. I scrub it in with an old toothbrush

I scrape out the rotted stuff, wash it with a 10-1 bleach solution, and put a fan on it. Then after an hour or so, I brush on some captan powder and let it dry with the fan. Has always worked for me.

Good luck Mark.

I just leave the bottle of Dalconil next to the pumpkin and pour it on as needed. And then till it in for the spring...

if it looks worse after the daconil treatment, press lightly on the area and see if any fluid or mush is in the darker area. if so, i get a teaspoon and use the tip to scrape lightly until it is all removed to healthy tissue. then toothbrush with a 10% bleach solution and let dry completely with a fan on it. then daconil it up again. repeat sometimes all the way to the way off. by the end any part of the stem is better than no stem, or stem rot that starts heading into the pumpkin. nip it in the bud before that happens if it gets real bad closer to the kin.

It helps stop decay and rot. I have not had a cavity in years. Helps as a whitener too
