Not saying I seen this this year... yet, but dont be hasty and trade any seeds until after all the weigh offs are over this year, I did this one time and boy did I lose a great seed. Grower knew what was being grown off that certain seed that year and had the inside scoop.LOL,, So if you see someone wanting to trade seeds now, they know something you dont,,lol.

Just a heads up,,lol.

Lastly, after this year, what new seeds or seeds that havent been grown very much will be the seeds to keep for next year,, that you think or know will be good ones?

I think it is anything that was pollinated with a 1385 Jutras.

Brooks,

Do you have any insider info you would like to share? I promise I won't say anything to anyone. It'll just be between you and me!! Just post the info here and I'll get it later.

Thanks,MG

While i may share your concern. A Wallace seed is a guarenteed seed to grow a great hogg! And seeds from joe Pukos are worth the risk esp. For my dinky patch. I only have a 400 lbs. Pumpkin. Its not that bad for the limited area I have to plant. Imho. Proven seeds from great growers are the way to go! Can I get a witness!

Kenny,
I agree, Wallace's and Pukos tend to make nice crosses....but as long as the crosses were controlled and with the genuine seeds, I wouldn't limit my selection to just the more famous growers. A Wallace seed may grow a "great hogg", but only if the grower does his large part of the equation.
There are so many great crosses out there to choose from.....from many different growers.

In all likelihood I will take next year off for pumpkin growing but there are two seeds that I would like to try

1098 Picketts- 1219 Colbert x 723 Bobier- Grew 1315 Picketts and was a rock.

1096 Privitera- same cross as 1385 Jutras. For the second year in a row a member of our club is growing it and this year Tom Corkum has a beauty going, big and beautiful, kicking all of our butts. Those two stick out for me but there are tons of other good choices as well.

At the risk of irking some of my dearest growing buddies...bull turd!

Great seeds for growing, trading & auctions are the result not of the breeders name but rather the results of great growing efforts.

Clean seeds that haven't been grown are essentially useless regardless who made the cross.

No seed is guaranteed to grow anything. That said...names like Jutras, Wallace, Pukos & McKie attract the patches of the best growers which make the results stand out.

If folks want their own seeds to command attention, tear a page out of the Wallace handbook & grow your own. Just make sure to grow them well.

I agree with Tremor; there are those that consistently grow'm well and big; but. Never know what will go in what patch; between soil, weather, care, and seed potential. I have a surprise or six this year; some may be that I didn't do justice to what I grew, but. I didn't nickname that one "Monster" for nothing.... You Just Never Know until the scale gets bent.

Steve, I agree in principle, without the know how it doesn't matter what seed you have. HOWEVER, your right brain logic forgets the illogical concept that some of us posess, the attraction, possibility, the potential that a certain seed may have, regardless of the cross. That's half the fun of it. Whether it be bright orange or bland and ugly, some seeds just do it for us, forget the logic. Favorite growers, good marketing whatever, the potential when the seed sees dirt in the spring to the culmination in the fall, that's why we are so attracted to this wonderful hobby that brings so many folks from such diverse backgrounds together. At least for me.

Steve,
I agree with you in regards to the demand for a seed. I don't agree with you in regards to a seed's potential.

There are so many variables when it comes to growing a giant pumpkin that the seed selection really only matters for the months of November through March. It helps us get through those months of the long nights with something to preoccupy ourselves. Once they get planted in April or May your dealing with the plant, the weather, insects, animals, disease, weeds, water timers that crap out on you when you go away for a week. I can take the most desireable seed out there and grow a mediocre pumpkin with it, heck almost anyone can. And I think the best growers could take a no-name seed, with good genetics and make other good growers eyes bug with the results. Then there's the good seeds grown by good growers that just don't perform like their siblings. Not all seeds from a pumpkin are created equal. It's always nice to find you have a "hot" seed in your collection. What you end up doing with it is really what counts in the end.

We kinda got off the subject some, but thats ok, its a great topic .
But what I meant was this,, say someone is growing a huge pumpkin from say Iowa from a 1413 Werner seed right now, and its over 1700 lbs and still growing, and only a few guys know about this monster. Then one of these guys gets a idea they need to get this seed before anyone finds out what it has grown, so they get on here middle of the season on the seed exchange board and start asking for a trade for a 1413 Werner seed, they want this seed before you or anyone else finds out and it gets to popular.

All I'm saying is hold on to your seeds until the season is over, until you see what seed has grown what..
