With the end of year four rapidly approaching of planting giant pumpkins in the same spot, its time for me to plan about resting the patch. I am looking for suggestions on what to plant while resting my soil. I want to put in something fun as well as practical, with more of the emphasis on fun. I'm leaning toward wild flowers, short sunflowers for bird seed, or possibly amaranth.

Winter rye is the boring answer. I like the idea of sunflowers but watch out for adverse issues (smeone will hopefully reply). I think a hot tub and some Miss Universe contestents would make a great backdrop if I was invited as well.

Doesn't yellow mustard kill mycorrhizae?
I could be wrong so anyone with more info on it please set the record right.
