With the new research coming out, I'm wondering if anyone is thinking like I am? Back to Nature, look to Mother Nature for answers we seek. What's easy to forget is fertilizing is unnatural. It's an unnatural mankind activity. You'll never see an elf pushing a fertilizer spreader around a redwood forest. Why I'll split hairs with an organic fanatic, on the use of the word natural and defining themselves and what they do as one and the same the same thing. But what does Natural do? She does all her soil ammending in the Fall. Dead leaves and grass, basic compost. However, what else? Then it goes into Winter and microbial activity slows way down. Composting proceeds at, not an explosive rate, but very slow rate until Spring. Maybe we need to take a lesson from her. In the words of the prophet, slow and what wins the race? More of the same here too?

what new research? Not likely. Mother nature doesn't grow 1700lb pumpkins. Fertilizing is natural...happens all the time....remember--bears DO sh*t in the woods. Natural doesn't get 1700 lb pumpkins...still don't get it? What prophet? (and whats his biggest?) You must be really bored............

Jack, I've been to the redwood forests, there were no elves fertilizing anything, those were marijuana growers out there fertilizing their plants. They are not people to be trifled with as they are even more protective of their crop than giant pumpkin growers. It might not hurt to get together with one of them though and pick their brains on plant culture and growing techniques. I'm sure they study up on this just as diligintly as some of us do. Oh, I don't think the person you quoted was a prophet, maybe a sage though. I do take your point though regarding the timing and volume of organic amendments.

Lol@Pap! I'm thinking the 12 gauge with some double 00 buck shot will do the trick a little better, and make sure you hit the pumpkin too, make it tougher,,

I think the moral of the story is to lay off the chemical ferts and do your soil amendments in the fall. I believe most folks realize this, but there are a few still out there that grow in grass or gravel and wait until the fruit hits day 10 and then they go on a miracle grow binge and hold out for a WR. I'm sure we are all guilty of pushing ferts around the patch the wrong way at one time or another along the way.

There was this bear in the woods taking a crap, when along came this rabbit. The bear asked do you have trouble with poop sticking to your fur when you crap? Rabbit said no! Bear picks up the rabbit and wipes his AXX with him.

I dont really think so. Last year I used barely any chemical fertilizers and my plants were underfed. This year I used alot of chemical fertilizers and my plants were way better. They were fertilizers that were low in salt.I think if the fertilizers do not contain to much salt you are ok. I mean you can grow organic corn or broccoli for example but these pumpkins we grow are so huge no natural process can support them.

Maybe the Pilgrims never planted the fish in their gardens. I think they just swam there and died creating beneficial organic fertilizer for the natural corn.

Jack you write like a song, have you ever sang a song because it sounds good, then you listen to the words and they don't make any sense if you were to say them. You just said all that bulls t and in a nutshell you said mothernature does her thing every year. Pleasant reading. Cheese eater Rich says thanks for letting me speak my cheesey mind.
