I discovered a small pin hole halfway down the main (between the stump and pumpkin) this morning. A good amount of water is being forced out of the hole...what can be done to salvage the vine? The fruit has averaged 21 pounds per day the past three days. I have a decent amount of main (terminated) and secondaries past the pumpkin.

Can the main be salvaged? Should I go ahead and cut her off? Stop watering for a while? I don't have a clue what to do.....

Any thoughts and/or suggestions would be graciously appreciated.

I am by no means an expert, but I would take a needle and syringe, and inject the hole with about 1 or 2 cc's of a mixture of daconil and sevin.

Would kill any fungus or bug that is munching in there, while not killing the vascular system of your vine.

I would not cut the main off there.

Some of the experts may have a much better idea than I however.

Hopefully it's an isolated spot and you can dry it up with a fan, but I'd check the main a little closer either side of the hole by a few leaf nodes. gently squeeze the main and see if it's solid. Nursed a wet spot here for a couple days before noticing main was punked out, mushy, but outside appeared ok! Good luck!

Depends on what caused it. If any rot , then there may be bigger issues going on. Is your stump healthy ? If there is a problem you may have to cut the vine open to clean it out. Is the hole on top or bottom ? If its on top, then the vine is probally filled, not good. I sliced one up last year & got it dried, but only had 25% of the vine left. Basically, drain, disinfect,dry. Good luck

Ha! My mainvine has about 40 holes in it, all way way way bigger than 'pinhole'....
