I recall how crazy I was told I was, when I first began to notice a trend . That a rise in the amount of organics seemed to be causing a rise in the incident of disease. Only to have my suspicions confirmed with the contaminated spinach and the others that followed. A new report out explains it. Organics cause an explosion of beneficial bacteria, which consumes all the oxygen in the soil, which in turn causes a pathogen explosion. Pathogens, the bad guys, grow best in the lack of oxygen afterwards. Further, deoxygenated water pulls metals like iron and copper out of the soil particles at a much higher rate. Which are carried deeper into the ground and away from the plant's roots. Weakening the plant's resistance to disease.
At the very least, it might explain what growers good at making aerated compost tea aren't doing to their soil. They don't deplete the soil oxygen by using it.

Jack, what was the cause of the "contaminated spinach" that you noted in your initial post?

Compost tea is the way to go, I agree with you Dick B. Brooks, Jack may be on to something here. Not unlike an explosion of beneficial bacterial consuming all the oxygen in a batch of CT, like when two much molasses is used, maybe the same is true in the scenario described by Jack. All I know is this is the 1st year I have used CT and I am sold. BTW Brooks, depending on how this post goes, keep it in the archives, it may be a keeper. Good luck guys.

I want to hear more about that "deoxygenated water" stuff !
"Which are carried deeper into the ground"....what, the iron and the copper are carried deeper into the ground ? Carried by what ?....the lone hydrogen atoms that have been abandoned by their oxygen partners ?
True, the chemical companies are experiencing a progressive loss of business and the favoring of growers seeking more organic substances for their plant nutrition needs. Who knows what sort of "report" they will come out with next !
