Jim, most start right away. I protect mine early from birds and squirrels with a protective basket. Once they outgrow the basket at about 15 days, I cover with a white sheet.

thanks glen, i have no problems with animals so i think i will start on day 15, that is about 9 more days for me, it has been hard to get one set with all the rain, but as soon as the patched dried up they seem to start taking, and also stopped the fertilizing at this time....jim

Mine have never seen direct sunlight.

Is a covering 'house' really needed, or is just a few white towels plenty? (ie: are we just protecting from direct sun, or do the coverings provide another purpose?)
I just have a card table over mine - it is pretty bright under there, but no 'direct' light hits the pumpkin. Should I be doing more?
(ps. I assume the sun hardens the rind and that's why we shield, correct?)
