Lots of debate on this subject. I only have roughly 200-300 sq ft behind mine and it is doing fine. I have roughly a 500 sq ft plant though. But if you set a 10 ft kin you can always grow a pitch fork or start swinging secondaries up but you won't get that fast growth bec you are still growing plant before kin. Mine did not take off until I stopped the secondaries before the kin.

If your book writing comment was directed at me, how I read it, I am sorry. There are no easy answers in growing pumpkins, hence why there is a bigpumpkin website and why we can sit and chat for hours about different techniques. I have chewed Matt Debaccos ear off this year. I hope I am not writing another book....Area behind pumpkin should be between 200 and 500 sq ft but no more and no less....well maybe a little...more or less....

nope trailor 1116, not directed at you and no negative vibes here at all, the more books the better and some new writers would be nice.

Has anyone tried to measure how many feet of vines they have behind the pumpkin? With sq ft you kind just have a general idea on the size of the plant, but the length of the vines would give you an exact measurment.

I am going to bigger plants, not really for size of the plant per say, but for new leaves and overall plant health for late season growth. This year 625 for small sites and 1200 for bigger ones. Next year, whatever the plant wants, it gets. Fewer plants more time per plant, more open room as well to combat the onset of powdery mildew. All but the main runner will be behind the fruit.
