I have a plant with a 70-80 pound est pumpkin 4-5 feet out that has stopped growing it seems (been the same size for about a week)and is turning orange but at 15 feet or so on the main vine another pumpkin has formed. For awhile while the pumpkin at 4 feet was growing the vines slowed down but now its reversed.

I plan to leave my 4 feet out pumpkin on the vine as long as I can but also plan on letting the bees pollinate the 15 foot female. I do not care if the first pumpkin grows anymore. I would like to see how big the other pumpkin will grow and if I can get two fruit off this plant.

Will I have problems with this?

Thanks

If the first one stopped growing at that size it's probably going to rot anyway before harvest time. Get rid of it and concentrate on the one down the vine. 4 feet out is way to close anyway. Just my opion

Dito what hoots said. If you set a pumpkin 4 feet out on the main. No wonder its only 80 lbs. You see there isn't enough plant to feed the fruit. The fruit is feed by the plant BEHIND the pumpkinl. Concentrate on the 15 feet pumpkin cull the 80 pounder.

812 Graham in '08 pollinated at 5 feet from the main, keep the plant growing as long as possible believe me they will backfeed. Good luck !

Thats probably the exception, not the rule. I wouldn't bank on it just because it's happened a handful of times. No doubt the better bet is the one 15ft out. Especially if the 80 pounder has stopped growing.

If the 80 pounder stopped growing there's no need to leave it on the vine.

Wow, your story sounds dead on mine. I Cut my pumpkin off that had quit growing....I Have one or possiblbly two new ones set My vines have taken off and and new pumpkins came out everywhere. I believe with the new growth of leaves the plant will produce another 1 or 2 descent sized pumpkins. The main vine is well over 40 feet and may hit 50' or more

Thanks folks for the advice

I am going to let my 62" in diameter pumpkin turn bright orange on the vine and watch the other pumpkin
