It seems a lot of growers this time of the year are starting to ask questions and have concerns about stem stress. Browsing through different diaries I have found that some growers are terminating the vine right after the pumpkin while others are splinting the vine with styrofoam and letting the main continue. Which action will give the better result? I have mycorrhizae under many of my tap roots before and after the fruit on the main vine. Am I correct in saying that pumpkins can pull nutrients in from both sides? Will it benefit me to have an extra 10ft of main after the pumpkin?

DHertz, I believe there is alot of pumpkin growth that comes from infront of the pumpkin, here is a picture of a pumpkin at about 100lbs where the main was lost about 2 ft from the pumpkin in early July, and then what it ended up,(604lbs), I had a couple vines before the pumpkin and the rest came from infront of the pumpkin. http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=56238

Thanks Brooks I will plan on keeping the main vine intact and growing.

I have just let my vines grow and 80% of my main vine on one plant is in front of the pumpkin on it
But this pumpkin seems to have stopped growing
